What causes knee pain?
Knee pain can have many different causes. Sometimes symptoms start after a clear injury, while other problems develop gradually due to changes in activity, training load, strength or joint health.
Common causes of knee pain we assess include:
-
Knee osteoarthritis
-
Patellofemoral pain
-
Meniscus injuries
-
Ligament sprains and injuries
-
Tendon problems, including patellar tendinopathy
-
Pain following running or sport
-
Muscle weakness or reduced control around the hip, knee or ankle
-
Knee pain following a fall or accident
-
Post-operative knee rehabilitation
-
Persistent or recurring knee pain
-
Reduced knee movement or stiffness
You do not need to know exactly what is causing your pain before booking. Identifying the likely source of your symptoms is part of your physiotherapy assessment.
Symptoms you may notice:
Knee problems can present differently from person to person.
You may experience:
-
Pain at the front, inside, outside or back of the knee
-
Pain when walking or standing
-
Difficulty using stairs
-
Pain when squatting or kneeling
-
Stiffness after sitting or first thing in the morning
-
Swelling around the knee
-
Clicking or grinding sensations
-
Reduced confidence putting weight through the leg
-
Weakness or instability
-
Pain during running, gym training or sport
If your knee pain is stopping you doing the things you enjoy, physiotherapy may help.
How can physiotherapy help knee pain?
Treatment will depend on your individual assessment.
Your rehabilitation programme may include:
Exercise rehabilitation
Targeted strengthening can improve the capacity of the muscles supporting your knee and help you gradually return to everyday activity, exercise or sport.
Mobility exercises
Where knee stiffness or reduced movement is contributing to your symptoms, specific mobility exercises may be used.
Hands-on treatment
Manual therapy may sometimes be used alongside exercise to help improve movement, reduce stiffness or make rehabilitation more comfortable.
Activity and load management
Doing too much too quickly can aggravate some knee conditions. Equally, avoiding movement completely can contribute to weakness and reduced confidence.
We can help you find an appropriate level of activity and gradually build from there.
Sports rehabilitation
For sporting injuries, treatment can progress beyond simply becoming pain-free.
We can work on strength, control, balance, change of direction and sport-specific demands before you return fully to training.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture can help with pain relief enabling you to gain better pain free movement to be able to perform your exercises.
Neubie Therapy
Where appropriate, you'll undergo a mapping assessment for us to pin point areas of pain. We then complete exercises assisted by the neubie machine for electrical stimulation assistance.
Knee arthritis treatment
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of persistent knee pain.
Symptoms may include:
-
Pain during walking
-
Stiffness
-
Difficulty with stairs
-
Reduced knee movement
-
Pain after prolonged sitting
-
Reduced confidence exercising
Being told you have arthritis does not automatically mean you need to stop exercising.
Appropriately prescribed exercise and strengthening are important components of managing knee osteoarthritis.
At Mossley Physio, we can help you develop an exercise programme that is realistic for your current ability and gradually progresses as your strength and confidence improve.
Knee pain from running or sport
Running and sporting knee pain can occur when the demands being placed on the knee exceed its current capacity.
Your physiotherapist can assess factors such as:
-
Recent changes in training
-
Strength
-
Movement control
-
Recovery
-
Previous injury
-
Running or sporting demands
We can then build a rehabilitation programme designed around the activity you want to return to.
Do I need a scan for knee pain?
Not every episode of knee pain requires an X-ray or MRI.
In many cases, a detailed clinical assessment can guide appropriate treatment without imaging.
If we identify symptoms or examination findings that require further medical investigation, we will advise you accordingly.
When should knee pain be assessed urgently?
Seek urgent medical advice following a significant injury if you:
-
Cannot put weight through the leg
-
Have obvious deformity
-
Develop significant or rapidly increasing swelling
-
Have a hot, very swollen joint and feel systemically unwell
-
Develop unexplained calf swelling, redness or breathlessness
If you are unsure whether physiotherapy is appropriate, contact us and we can advise you on the best next step.
