You do not necessarily need to know exactly what is causing your back pain before booking an assessment. Assessing the problem is part of what we do.
What Causes Back Pain?
Back pain can develop for many different reasons and sometimes there is no single identifiable cause. Symptoms may develop suddenly after lifting, twisting or exercising, or gradually over time.
Factors that can contribute to back pain may include changes in activity, muscular weakness, reduced mobility, repetitive loading, prolonged positions, previous injuries and other musculoskeletal or neurological factors.
This is why we don't simply treat the painful area. Our physiotherapists assess how you move and how your symptoms behave before developing a rehabilitation programme around your individual needs.
Physiotherapy for Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain is extremely common, but that doesn't mean you should simply accept it.
Physiotherapy aims to help you understand your symptoms, improve your movement and gradually return to normal activity.
Depending on your assessment, your treatment programme may include:
Exercise Rehabilitation
A personalised exercise programme may be used to improve mobility, strength, control and confidence with movement.
Rather than providing everybody with the same generic exercises, we select exercises according to your symptoms, abilities and goals.
Manual Therapy
Where clinically appropriate, your physiotherapist may incorporate hands-on techniques alongside your rehabilitation programme.
Movement & Mobility Rehabilitation
If pain has made you nervous about bending, lifting, walking or exercising, we can gradually rebuild your tolerance and confidence with these movements.
Strengthening
Progressive strengthening can form an important part of rehabilitation, particularly for people experiencing recurrent symptoms or wanting to return to work, sport or exercise.
Advice & Education
Understanding back pain can be an important part of recovery.
We'll explain our assessment findings and give you practical advice about movement, activity and managing your symptoms.
Home Exercise Programme
Where appropriate, you'll receive exercises to continue between appointments so that your rehabilitation isn't limited to the time you spend in the clinic. We use an app available at your finger tips called Physiapp.
Neubie Therapy
Where appropriate, you'll undergo a mapping assessment for us to pin point areas of pain. We then complete exercises assisted by the neubie machine for electrical stimulation assistance.
Acupuncture
An assessment for medical acupuncture which can help with acute and chronic pain.
Sciatica & Back Pain
Back pain can sometimes occur alongside symptoms travelling into the buttock or leg.
These may include:
-
Leg pain
-
Tingling
-
Pins and needles
-
Numbness
-
Burning sensations
-
Altered sensation
-
Weakness
Symptoms like these can have several causes, so an appropriate clinical assessment is important.
If your presentation is suitable for physiotherapy, we'll develop an individual rehabilitation programme.
If we identify symptoms requiring further medical investigation, we'll advise you on the appropriate next step.
What Happens at Your First Back Pain Physiotherapy Appointment?
Your first appointment is about understanding you, not simply giving you a sheet of exercises.
Your physiotherapist may ask about:
-
When your back pain started
-
Where you experience your symptoms
-
Activities that make your symptoms better or worse
-
Previous episodes of back pain
-
Your medical history
-
Your work and daily activities
-
Exercise and sporting activities
-
Your current mobility
-
Your rehabilitation goals
Your physical assessment may then look at areas such as movement, strength, flexibility, neurological symptoms and functional activities.
We'll explain our findings and discuss an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan with you.
Do I Need a Scan for Back Pain?
Not everyone experiencing back pain needs an X-ray or MRI scan.
Your physiotherapist will assess your presentation and look for signs that may indicate whether further medical assessment or investigation is appropriate.
If we believe your symptoms require further investigation, we will advise you accordingly.
Should I Rest When I Have Back Pain?
Complete rest is not usually the long-term answer for uncomplicated back pain.
For many people, gradually returning to normal movement and activity forms an important part of recovery.
However, every presentation is different.
Your physiotherapist can help you determine an appropriate level of activity based on your symptoms and assessment.
